Defending the Faith – Part 2

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
– Genesis 2:7

Another classic argument used in apologetics was first known as the Teleological Argument. This argument focuses on the evidence of design in our universe. The syllogism for the argument would sound something like this: 1 – Things that show evidence of design must have a designer; 2 – The universe shows evidence of design; 3 – Therefore, the universe must have a designer. This argument is still used a lot today, but it is more commonly referred to as the Intelligent Design Argument.

Here is an example: If you found a stone while walking in the woods, you probably wouldn’t think too much of it. However, if you found a watch in the woods, you would wonder where it came from, who the owner was, etc. This is because a watch shows more evidence of design with all of its small, intricate parts. In the same way, the human body, for example, is incredibly complex in design; just think about everything involved in a single eye! Not only do our bodies show design, but they also come with an instruction manual called DNA, which, quite literally, programs us to be the way we are. No one would look at an instruction manual for a computer and think it wrote itself; someone had to write it. The Lord is an awesome, intelligent Designer, and His “fingerprints” are evident all throughout Creation.
