How Does a Garden Grow?

For a few weeks now, I have seen the landscape around our house change as my wife has gradually worked in our gardens. Weeds have been pulled, new flowers have been planted, and fresh mulch has been spread. I probably don’t tell her enough that I appreciate her efforts in helping our house look nice and inviting. A lot of work goes into making a garden grow, and the same is true for our spiritual growth.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul addressed the issue of factions or divisions that were forming in the church at Corinth. Instead of dividing themselves, Paul encouraged his readers to see how it takes more than one person to grow the church. Paul wrote: What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building (1 Cor. 3:5-9). We all have work to do, whether as a planter, a waterer, or a harvester, but, ultimately, our growth comes from the Lord.

Blessings,
Pastor Zach
