Earlier this past week, I discovered that one of our neighbors’ turkeys decided to roost in a compost/brush pile in our back yard. I then noticed that she was not alone; she had made herself a little nest for nearly 2 dozen eggs! We didn’t realize how many eggs there were until later in the week when, sadly, we discovered mama’s feathers strewn about the yard; something had gotten her. Mae collected the eggs, and we kept them warm until our neighbor returned home. We’re hoping that about half of the eggs will survive.
It’s always sad when something like that happens, but it can also be a good reminder for us as believers. In John 10, Jesus employs the analogy of sheep to describe His people. He pointed out how people had come before He did, but they were thieves and robbers. Jesus, our Good Shepherd proclaimed: I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (vv. 9-10). This is not a declaration of protection from all physical harm. Rather, Jesus gives assurance of eternal life through Him; something that cannot be stolen or destroyed by anyone or anything.
Blessings,
Pastor Zach
